Angel had built a successful career as an IT professional in El Salvador when he received long-awaited news: He’s been approved for a green card to join his mother in the United States.

Angel arrived in California in February 2020, just weeks before COVID-19 put the country on lockdown. His offer for a job was canceled, which made his situation really difficult. He was able to find a job working at a grocery store as an essential worker. While working there he contracted COVID-19; during that time he learned about Upwardly Global and started to rebuild his career in IT.

Through a partnership between Upwardly Global & Google, Angel got free access to top-level certification courses. He earned a Google IT Support Professional Certificate that boosted his U.S. job search. In late 2020, all of Angel’s work paid off: He was offered an IT helpdesk job at the San Francisco airport, an opportunity to contribute his in-demand skills to his community.
