Three years since evacuation from Afghanistan, Upwardly Global celebrates the contributions of Afghan refugees in the U.S.
NEW YORK — Three years after the evacuation of over 80,000 Afghans to the United States, Upwardly Global continues to advocate for career pathways for Afghan refugees, whose contributions greatly enrich the U.S. economy and its communities.
Since August 2021, Upwardly Global has supported Afghan refugees in rebuilding their lives and careers in the United States, advocating for policies that ensure their safety and security. The organization has assisted over 2,300 Afghan refugees in their professional journeys, achieving significant milestones that highlight the potential of this community.
Among approximately 41,000 working-age Afghan refugees, 10,250 possess professional experience and degrees. These individuals represent a significant, untapped resource for the American workforce, capable of filling critical roles across various sectors.
In a previous report, Upwardly Global found that Afghan newcomers have the potential to contribute up to $1.71 billion in annual earnings and $227 million in annual tax dollars.
“The contributions of our Afghan allies are a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience that diversity brings to our nation,” says Jina Krause-Vilmar, President and CEO of Upwardly Global. “They not only enrich our communities but also drive economic growth and innovation. As we mark this milestone, it’s clear that our work is far from over. We must continue to support and advocate for these individuals who have already given so much to their new home.”
In light of these contributions, Upwardly Global urges Congress to pass legislation that would establish a pathway to permanent status for Afghan allies, such as the Afghan Adjustment Act. This legislation is crucial to providing stability for Afghan refugees, allowing them to continue contributing to their new communities without fear of uncertainty regarding their legal status.
