Did you know that you can hire a talented and experienced job seeker to your staff and that the Federal government will pay their salary until September 2010? Upwardly Global is partnering with the City of San Francisco around a Jobs Now program which enables local companies and non profits to increase headcount at minimal cost.

The City is using federal stimulus funds to create great employment opportunities to help local businesses succeed and to also put people to work. As an employer, you hire job seekers who are 100% wage subsidized from the date of hire through September 2010. All you have to pay are taxes and benefits.

To learn how to recruit highly skilled employees through the Jobs Now program please join a free webinar jointly hosted by Upwardly Global and the City of San Francisco.

Building Cross Cultural Competency in Recruiting, Interviewing and Retaining Global Talent

Description
Foreign born candidates face unique challenges as they interview for jobs in the U.S. Language and cultural differences can make it more difficult to understand these applicants.This seminar will help volunteers recognize how misunderstandings occur in cross-cultural interviews and will suggest specific tools that will improve your ability to screen candidates from different cultures.

Learning Objectives
• Identify the key reasons why some foreign born applicants are rejected during the resume review part of the recruiting process;
• Find resources to help you evaluate foreign-gained experience and education; and
• Utilize specific techniques to help you evaluate foreign-gained experience and education.
• Identify how culture can influence the interview experience;
• Recognize cross-cultural misunderstandings when they occur; and
• Refine your interviewing techniques so that you accurately identify highly qualified applicants who can meet your company’s needs.

Government Jobs for Foreign-born Professionals

The first census, or count of the population, was conducted in 1790 in the U.S. and has been carried out every 10 years since then. The next census occurs in 2010. The census counts everyone residing in the United States: in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Island Areas. Data obtained from the 2010 Census will determine how many representatives a state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives. The allocation of approximately $300 billion in federal funds every year is also based, in part, on census data. In short, the 2010 Census helps politicians make informed decisions that will impact each and every one of us.

In anticipation of the upcoming 2010 Census, the U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting for a large number of jobs nationwide. Jobs range from full-time managerial roles to part-time roles working in local communities. Bilingual and multilingual job seekers are strongly encouraged to apply.

Join us for a web-based discussion on jobs with the U.S. Census Bureau.

Mentor Training for Volunteers

As a Mentor, you will be assigned to one immigrant professional jobseeker we are helping to find professional employment. Mentors help the jobseeker connect with other professionals, prepare for job interviews, and serves as an "industry expert" as well as a "job-search coach" by providing general advice on areas such as the American workplace, networking, applying to jobs, following up with employers, identifying opportunities and preparing a "30 second elevator speech". We require a minimum of 5 hours per month and at least one meeting in person per month. As a Mentor you can work with our jobseekers in person, by phone and even by email. Oftentimes our jobseekers may have specific questions regarding the transferability of their skills and education as well. Mentors attend a 60-minute orientation session and meet with their mentees once a month.

For Volunteers- Networking Practice

Success in the American job search does depend on WHO you know!

The Networking Practice session simulates a typical networking environment and gives jobseekers a chance to practice their networking skills in a friendly environment, connect to professional peers and develop job search leads. The event is a little more structured than a typical networking event to ensure that the jobseekers mingle with volunteers, and can include wine, cheese and other refreshments. This is a great opportunity to interact with our jobseekers on a social level and to directly help these individuals improve their networking skills.

UpGlo Fundraiser in NYC

Please RSVP to nadiya@upwardlyglobal.org

Come learn about how Upwardly Global (www.upwardlyglobal.org) is helping high potential immigrants reach the American Dream!

This year Upwardly Global will open its services to the 25,000 underemployed immigrant New Yorkers. In their home countries they were businesspeople, educators, scientists, journalists and nonprofit professionals. In the US they are nannies, cabdrivers, and security guards. With our help and yours, they can rebuild their careers and lives in the US.

Entrance to this event will be $15, which includes one free drink, (yes, that means a REAL drink from the bar), appetizers, and a raffle ticket. Donations, including matching corporate contributions, strongly encouraged!

For further information on the event or on how you can make a tax-deductible online contribution in case you cannot attend, please call 415.834.9901 or email nadiya@upwardlyglobal.org.

Friends and colleagues welcome!
