The New "Global English"
In a recent Financial Times article titled “Whose Language?” Michael Skapinker discusses the use of English as a global language for business. While it is incumbent on non-native English speakers around the world to learn English, Skapinker notes that it is the native English speakers who will have to adjust and learn to operate in this new global language.

Spotlight Job: Employer Network Placement Specialist (New York)
The Placement Specialist will have responsibility for creating interview opportunities at companies and organizations in a range of industries for Upwardly Global’s jobseekers. He/she will be expected develop contacts across industries through cold calling, professional networking, and cultivating Upwardly Global’s existing volunteer base for support in placement efforts. This person will work directly with Upwardly Global jobseekers to understanding their skills sets and professional backgrounds in order to generate the most appropriate opportunities.

Spotlight: Financial/Cost Analyst from Peru - New York (unable to relocate at this time)
Elizabeth is a financial professional with five years experience as a Finance and Cost Analyst for Essalud, the largest national public health insurance company in Peru. Among her accomplishments are managing a $58 million budget, implementing a new technology system, and determining cost standards for over 300 hospitals. She speaks English, Spanish, and is fluent in Italian. Elizabeth has a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering.
Spotlight: Laboratory Tech/Research Associate, Eritrea - San Francisco (willing to relocate)
Minet, from Eritrea, has 3 years of progressive experience in an analytical laboratory focused on chemical, biological and physical analysis of water, soil and food. As a Laboratory Lead, Minet monitored negative environmental impacts of super-intensive aquaculture operations, resulting in the correction of misinformation held by the Eritrean government. Minet graduated with a M.Sc. in Environmental Science from the top ranked European university for life science, Wageningen University.
Spotlight: Biotechnology PhD Researcher, Morocco - New York (unable to relocate at this time)
Samira is a researcher with a PhD in Biotechnology and Biology from the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research & Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany. She has published widely, contributed chapters to several books, and is looking for an opportunity to use her skills in a research lab in the NY area. Samira is fluent in Arabic, English, French and German.
Spotlight: Purchasing and Financial Management, Brazil - San Francisco (willing to relocate)
Sidney, from Brazil, brings more than 10 years experience in administrative management, purchasing, and quality control in the construction industry. Most recently, Sidney worked as a Purchasing Manager for a mid-sized private construction company. He is experienced in managing multi-million dollar budgets, developing investment forecasts, developing and proposing contract bids, and managing and training employees. Sidney holds a BA in Business Administration and is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Success Stories
Meenakshi, from India, recently joined Seedco as a non-profit Program Manager and Consultant of Opportunity NYC, a poverty alleviation program partnering with the NYC Government. Meenakshi got connected to this opportunity through an Upwardly Global volunteer whom she met at a Mock Interview Day. Meenakshi has worked as a Consultant for Oxfam in Hong Kong and SEWA, the largest member based organization of poor working women in India. She holds a Master of Philosophy, an MBA and a undergrad degree in Biology and Chemistry and speaks 5 languages.
Ivan, a seasoned business and finance manager from Bolivia, recently accepted a position as an Operational Auditor with Chevron, which he was connected to via Upwardly Global’s Employer Partner, Robert Half International. Ivan will apply his 10+ years of experience in financial management, analysis and planning, within his new role. He also contributes his entrepreneurial experience from a recent position, as Chief Executive Officer, of a successful glass recycling plant in Bolivia .
Ruben, from Peru, recently joined the Fresh Air Fund as their Community Outreach Coordinator. Previously, he has held roles such as Sales Manager and Production Manager. He holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Services and a Bachelor of Sciences in Agriculture. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
